Description

What is the Safe Spaces Trail?

Safety is at the heart of all community building moments. Everyone needs to feel safe and respected in the spaces they exist within.

‘Safe Spaces’ was born in 2019 by Comics Youth due to a clear need for inclusive and progressive spaces for marginalised, silenced and misunderstood young people to create meaningful moments and exist within an environment of real safety.

The aim of Safe Spaces is to create events, spaces and workshops that integrate compassion, learning and safety into every discussion and community driven space.

The programme is led by marginalised youth who want to build lasting change and community within the Liverpool City Region. The more that the young people delved into the community of Liverpool, the more we recognised these community spaces needed highlighting for the wonderful work they have already been doing. From this, the Safe Spaces Trail was born.

The Safe Spaces Trail is set up around the Liverpool City Centre, with an immersive map and podcast guiding you around the centre to find the safe spaces that young people have highlighted to be their haven amongst the chaos of their busy lives. At each safe space, there is a piece of artwork- whether visual or auditory, to better represent the space and why it has been chosen. The aim of the trail is to welcome people back into the city, build community within the spaces that are getting inclusivity right and reminding people that safety and retreat can be found even in the biggest spaces like the city centre.
